Problem Solvin” rel=”nofollow”>ing Exercise LWS101, Semester 2 2016
Evie is a registered nurse who works in” rel=”nofollow”>in the oncology ward at a regional hospital in” rel=”nofollow”>in Queensland. One of her patients, Ragu, is sufferin” rel=”nofollow”>ing from bowel cancer. Ragu’s prognosis is very poor and his life expectancy is short. In fact, the treatin” rel=”nofollow”>ing team does not expect he will live for much longer. Ragu’s condition has deteriorated in” rel=”nofollow”>in the last 24 hours and his pain” rel=”nofollow”>in has become significantly worse. Ragu’s family have been in” rel=”nofollow”>in constant attendance. After spendin” rel=”nofollow”>ing some time speakin” rel=”nofollow”>ing to Ragu and his family, Dr Fox gives Evie a written medication order for a higher dose of pain” rel=”nofollow”>in killer. The doctor says to Evie, ‘Ragu is in” rel=”nofollow”>in a lot of pain” rel=”nofollow”>in. Admin” rel=”nofollow”>inister this medication in” rel=”nofollow”>in accordance with the script.’ Dr Fox then departs to attend to other patients.
Evie admin” rel=”nofollow”>inisters the dose of pain” rel=”nofollow”>in killer in” rel=”nofollow”>in accordance with Dr Fox’s written order but Ragu’s condition does not improve, in” rel=”nofollow”>in fact it worsens. Ragu begs Evie to in” rel=”nofollow”>increase his dose as his pain” rel=”nofollow”>in is unbearable. Evie can see Ragu is in” rel=”nofollow”>in a lot of pain” rel=”nofollow”>in but she is concerned that an in” rel=”nofollow”>increase in” rel=”nofollow”>in dosage might put Ragu at risk of respiratory depression. Ragu contin” rel=”nofollow”>inues pleadin” rel=”nofollow”>ing with Evie to in” rel=”nofollow”>increase his dose and put him out of his misery. He states ‘I’ve had enough of this life – Please just let me go in” rel=”nofollow”>in peace.’ Evie rin” rel=”nofollow”>ings Dr Fox who advises Evie verbally over the telephone to admin” rel=”nofollow”>inister a higher dose of pain” rel=”nofollow”>in killer.

Apply the ethical and legal decision-makin” rel=”nofollow”>ing framework to this scenario to advise Evie about how she should proceed.
