• Written in block form (without indentation) on a separate page after the title page.
• Page is titled Abstract (centered)
• <250 words
• does not use any abbreviations or detailed statistics
Structured abstract includes:
• Aim: stated as “To report a concept analysis of x”
• Background: why is this analysis needed?
• Design: Concept analysis
• Data Sources: (databases searched, keywords used, the period of data collection)
• Methods:
• Results:
• Conclusion: What do you conclude from this?
• Keywords: maximum of 10 (should include concept analysis and x)
o Keywords is below the abstract, indented five spaces and italicized.

• Begins with Introduction as a bolded centered heading.
• Introduction explains the paper.
• Includes the purpose of the paper is to clarify the concept of __________.
• Includes why the concept is important to be clarified in nursing.
• Provides some indication of the incidence of this concept if available.
Includes a complete definition for the concept.

C. Method
• Includes a centered bolded heading of Methods.
• Describes the research method used in this paper as Walker and Avant’s model of concept analysis.
• Specifies the library databases and all search methods that were used in the literature review.
Specifies the number of papers used in the concept analysis.

D. Literature review – Identifies the uses of the concept
You will examine the use of the concept in the disciplines: Nursing, Medical Doctors, Families, and The Law of it. Definitions that are included should be analyzed.
The literature is focused on how each discipline uses/studies the word/concept, what conditions must be present for the concept to occur, and what the outcomes of the
concept are.
• Bolded centered heading-Literature Review
• Side headings for each discipline-
o Uses in Nursing,
o Uses in Medical Doctors(Physicians)
o Uses in Families
o Uses in The Law
For each of the 4 disciplines above:
• All of the reviewed literature is written by persons in the specific discipline being reviewed.
• Accurately presents sufficient research findings or theoretical papers from each discipline to demonstrate how this concept is used in that discipline.
• Succinctly summarizes the results of published analyses of this concept.
• Includes any integrative reviews or policy papers published about the concept.
• All websites that are used are credible sources, such as federal agencies, professional organizations.
When available, differentiates how each discipline defines the antecedents, attributes, consequences of the concepts.

E. Determine the antecedents (5 points), essential /critical attributes (10 points),
consequences (5 points) of the concept.
Antecedents (5 points)
• is a bolded side heading.
• Narrative is written in paragraph form.
• The antecedents are clearly delineated and where appropriate, they are cited.
• They always precede the concept’s occurrence.
Essential attributes (10 points)

Consequences (5 points)
• Begins with a bolded side heading of Consequences.
All of the consequences of the concept are included and referenced where appropriate.

F. Develop cases using identified attributes (3 cases total)
Centered heading bolded- Constructed Cases
• Includes a brief paragraph about types of cases the will be used and their brief definitions.
• Model Case
o Begins with a bolded side heading Model Case. Model case is an actual situation describing a person and a situation that includes every essential attribute
identified earlier in the paper. The case is written in paragraph form. There is no slang or jargon included in the description. Every abbreviation is first written
out followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Ex: intravenous (IV). Concludes with a brief sentence summarizing why this is a model case.
Includes 2 other cases from this list: contrary, borderline, related, illegitimate. Each case is preceded by a bolded side heading such as Contrary Case, meets Walker
and Avant’s criteria for type of case, is written in paragraph form, & concludes with a brief description of why it is x case.

G. Define empirical referents
• Begins with a bolded side heading Empirical Referents.
• In a paragraph format, describes the empirical referents that measure the essential attributes.
• Includes the valid and reliable measures of the concept.
• References the measures that are described.
When there are not valid and reliable measures of the concept in the literature, proposes a reasonable way to measure the attributes of the concept.
