Provided Prompt

Instructions: Review “Terror from Below: Terrorism by Dissidents” in Understanding Terrorism by Martin, Gus. Using that chapter and the readings for Part 2 of class, answer the following prompt.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Several of the groups we have studied in Part 2 of our class had/have revolutionary or independence aspirations. However, their perceived enemies and reasons for actions are different. Write a thesis-led essay given these realities (about 1,400 words). Essay:

Discuss the IRA, ISIS, and the FARC (and their respective readings) and tell me about them. This will largely take a compare and contrast format. Use the chapter as general background information to place these groups in the general typology of terrorism. Then use the readings for the groups to tell me more about their goals and methods of arriving there.

This prompt is broad on purpose; you can formulate any thesis you see fit. There is a multitude of approaches you can take. You can emphasize religion, government oppression, methods of attacks, or anything you find interesting about these groups. I recommend including a table with the info you discuss in your paper. This will help you organize your argument.

The essay is due on Monday at the beginning of class before you take the in-class portion. Your exams will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria: understanding of and explicating the significance of key concepts; factual accuracy and completeness; and form/style (spelling, grammar, and composition).

Follow the provided prompt and the instructions on the assignment sheet for this paper, I have also attached a format outline for the essay. It does not have to be followed exactly but should be followed quite closely. If the format outline is unclear, I have also attached a sample paper. I have attached readings/articles which are to be used in the essay for evidence/quotations. The power points/lecture notes are for general information on the terrorist groups for the essay but are not to be used for evidence/quotations.
