American federal government

When we refer to “civil rights” we are referring to the right of a group to not be discriminated against because of some ethnic, racial, cultural or gender-related characteristic. Affirmative action was an outgrowth of the Civil Rights movement. It refers to a variety of policies and programs that seek to advance the position of minorities and women. Some of these programs have been extremely controversial.

How well has affirmative action worked to achieve its intended purpose(s)? If your last name begins with A-L, take the position that affirmative action continues to meet its intended purpose. If your last name begins with M-Z, take the position that affirmative action has lost its intended purpose and requires reform. Research and reference specific affirmative action policies and programs to support your position.

Suppose the government did nothing to help the poor and disadvantaged. What would the consequences be for our society? What would the consequences be for our political system?
