Association between Sleep Duration and Weight Gain amongst Middle Aged African Adults

Cases of obesity and weight gain have been on the increase in recent years in Africa. Studies in the field of sleep disorder have established that there exists a relationship between certain sleep disorder and weight gain. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether the duration of sleep in African adults of middle age has an effect on the rising cases of obesity. Two hundred and ten randomly selected African adults of middle age living in the country were observed for a period of 24 months in intervals of 12 months, and their BMI noted against their sleep duration patterns. As expected, it was found out that those who experienced short sleep had higher BMI. The findings of this study suggested that there is a connection between the increasing weigh gain and the duration of sleep.
