Beating Physician Burnout- Are EHRs the Enemy or Friend?
Burnout is “a long-term stress reaction marked by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a lack of sense of personal accomplishment.” (AHRQ 2017) In the healthcare environment, physicians have a high risk of burnout due to their packed work hours, demanding pace, emotional intensity, and time pressure, especially under this COVID-19 crisis.
There is an ongoing debate regarding the extent to which EHRs are associated with the epidemic of physician burnout. One group of scholars argues that EHRs bring Technostress (i.e., the stress related to technological tools) and increase physicians’ workloads (for example, see AAFP 2019). The other group contends that EHRs can improve clinical workflow and productivity, and therefore, reduce physicians’ burnout (for example, see Murphy 2016).
Q. Which argument do you agree with more? And how can we improve EHRs to reduce physician burnout?
