What do you think is the best way to get industry and the commercial world to adopt green chemistry manufacturing practices, and practices that include efficient use of energy? I come from a world (my past experience) that utilized regulations to achieve similar ends regarding simple pollution control. There were contentious legal battles over these but when put in place, they were reasonably effective in changing behavior. Regulations today are not always regarded as positively as in the past (try to get a new environmental rule through congress today…and they do represent the majority of the american public). Do we give up? Is laissez faire the answer? In Europe they have adopted the precautionary principle and are shifting the responsibility for safe standards onto the producers and are forcing action before certain harm is proven. If that’s not acceptable here, how do we get the next stages of improvement in place? Do we wait for another Flint Michigan or Love Canal?
