Chapter 3 “Moral Reasoning”
Chapter 4 “Moral Theories”
After doing so and jotting down some notes, please watch the following two videos that I created to help you
focus. There is a lot of material here so I thought these lectures might help you out.
In this lecture I give an overview of the 5 Ethical Approaches that Vaughn touches on and that are showcased
in the Markula Center for Applied Ethics website.
It is also where I lay out the ethical dilemma that the class will discuss. I mention in the video that you are going
to do this in teams. That has not worked out in the past so we are just doing this as a class-wide discussion.
Here is the protocol for approaching the dilemma and thinking through the 5 approaches:
This Framework for Ethical Decision Making is from the Markula Center for Applied Ethics. You will find this
very helpful as it gives you an overview of each of the 5 Approaches.
The groundwork for this group conversation has been set up in the lecture “The Muddy Waters of Ethics” in this
week’s folder. You have read the assigned chapters in Vaughn and viewed my two lectures. Now you are ready
to USE the “Making an Ethical Decision” procedure to figure out:
What is at stake in this dilemma?
What are the facts?
What is ‘best action’?
Which Ethical Approach gives you the most sound approach to figuring out ‘what is the ethical thing to do’? (In
your conversation, discuss the merits of at least two of the approaches I outline in the lecture and that are on
your handout via the Markula Center website)
What are your reasons for making the decision?
Using the Discussion Board tool in Blackboard is not the best way to have this conversations but we are going
to give it a go! I mention in the video that you are going to do this in teams. That has not worked out in the past
so we are just going to do this as a class-wide exercise.
As you begin this conversation with each other, allow for everyone to state his/her opinion but you are welcome
to combat it, of course. As you hammer out the 5 talking points outlined above, remember that your ultimate
goal is to come to a consensus as a team as to what is the ‘right action’ … save the old lady or save the
painting. Which of the Five Ethical Approaches provides the most potent reasons for your decision (and
remember that you need to debate over at least two of the ethical approaches)
And keep in mind…. there actually ARE sound, ethical reasons to save the art 🙂
