Library Information
MetSearch, eJournals (listed in the Journal A-Z), and e-Databases (listed in the Database A-Z) are the primary channels for books and other academic research materials and resources. We strongly encourage you to use MetSearch, rather than Google, as your main method of finding good quality academic output. You are expected to use a wide range of sources from books to journals articles, even in your first year with us. Cardiff Met’s Library Service spends £100,000s per year for this purpose.
Other than MetSearch, we are aware that students do use Google Scholar. Remember you can “redirect” results from Google Scholar to MetSearch – there’s a setting which enables that linking to appear in results. Ask a librarian or your tutor if you need help.
If you are struggling to find a journal article, remember the Library can help. Full contact details are given on their STUDY Portal. They even offer a free of charge Document Supply Service (available via MetSearch under “Interlibrary Loans link”) for harder to find materials.
To supplement your research, you may wish to use external websites, or link resolvers which endeavour to discover content for you. These include:
http://unpaywall.org/ – a browser plugin for Chrome or Firefox only
http://www.lazyscholar.org/
https://www.semanticscholar.org/ – very similar to Google Scholar
Research Gate – use with caution as not all of their material is legitimately distributed and may be subject to copyright and/or licence restrictions. Ask a librarian if in any doubt.
The Library aims to offer everything you need from your reading lists – please let them know if a book is missing or not available as they can easily buy more copies. You do not necessarily need to buy your own books. However, on occasion, you may wish borrow items from, or just use, other libraries. The easiest way of doing so is to join up, on a self-service basis, to SCONUL. Locally, we also have a reciprocal lending agreement with Cardiff Universities – apply at the Library Helpdesk. They will check that your account is in good standing and may ask you why you wish to use Cardiff Universities’ Libraries.
Other university libraries during their normal office hours are essentially like public libraries: anyone can walk in and browse the collection, sit at a desk and take notes. When a lending agreement is in place, such as SCONUL (see above), borrowing rights are limited to a few books, and other restrictions may apply. It’s worth noting that most libraries also allow “walk in access” for community borrowers (anyone other than their own students or staff) which allows for limited access to that university’s e-resources.
