Free period tracking app that helps women to monitor their cycle

“I chose to do my assessment on the app Clue. Clue is a free period tracking app that helps women to monitor their cycle and easily track their period and period symptoms. Additionally, it can help track sleep, sexual intercourse, mood, energy, pregnancy, and many other health related factors.

This app is very scalable. It has potential to expand in many ways. Clue has been around for over 12 years and therefore has had plenty of time to develop and improve. This means it has very few bugs or technical issues that interfere with its quality. I have been a user of this app myself since 2015 and have seen vast improvements in its design and uses. Originally Clue simply tracked menstrual cycles. It has now expanded to include the ability to track up to 28 separate health topics including birth control, exercise, mental state, temperature, and weight. There is room for Clue to continue to update its program and add more scalability. This could potentially include tracking specific foods in order to help women determine how their body is affected by their diet.

The clue app is incredibly user friendly and highly customizable. It’s usability is what makes it so appealing as many women do not want to spend extra energy to track their cycle. They want something easy and quick that they can use to monitor their health. The home screen of the app includes a visual representation of the cycle by highlighting in red on a circle when the next period will begin. At the bottom of the screen clear tabs are laid out. Here you can look at a calendar that predicts your next period, track, look at an analysis of your cycle, or discover more content through the app. When entering new data under the track option you are able to organize exactly what you want to monitor based off the 28 different tracking options. You simply click the “+“ and you can add or remove any health topic. This means that the Clue experience is very specific and you don’t have to be bothered by unneeded information. Clue especially utilizes simplicity, effective information presentation, and efficient information on the HIMSS Usability Chart due to the simple, informative, and aesthetic design of the app.

The Clue app is not very interoperable beyond being easy to log into on different devices. You use a username and passcode to log into the app and thus can easily access it when switching between devices. This particular app does not connect with other programs. It is self contained and one area where it could be improved is to allow for sharing of data. Though this information may not typically be something people share frequently, it would be useful to have an option to share health information with providers. Being able to share your usual cycle and symptoms with your doctor prior to going to a women’s check up or other procedure may be incredibly useful.

The app is very simple and user friendly. Clue has a 4.8 in the Apple App Store with over 280,000 reviews which shows how many people use and enjoy it. It would take most people only a few minutes to understand how to track their health information and to interpret it. The health information tracking and analysis can be very useful to women who want to be able to anticipate and predict their next menstrual cycle. Additionally being able to detect changes in period timing and symptoms can indicate health issues or signal disease. Clue can also be used to help plan pregnancy or track pregnancy symptoms which is vital to monitoring the progress of gestation and to accurately relay with the users OB-GYN. For many women, their period is already inconvenient and annoying enough. If a period tracking app is too difficult to understand, complicated in design, or lacks the necessary tracking and analysis women need they will not use it due to the added annoyance. This could mean that they may not detect changes that can be important to note for their own health. Having a simple, discreet, easy to use app that can help track cycles and symptoms helps all women who use it be in better control of their own health without added inconvenience.
