Jesus’ engagement with the Pharisees and those who opposed him.
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus’ engagement with the Pharisees and those who opposed him is found in the ways he interacts with them. Jesus told the Pharisees and those who challenged that temple of God was not a marketplace (John 2:16). The disciple could remember the ancient law as they listened to him; however, Pharisees and those who opposed had difficulties understanding what was communicated. Jesus said, “You will hear, to be sure, but never understand; and you will certainly see but never recognize what you are seeing” (Matthew 13: 14) as an explanation of why his opposers were unable to comprehend his masge. The Pharisees and those who opposed Jesus Christ could not engage in andragogy because they focused on their tradition and the laws of their society. They could also not incorporate their prior knowledge of Scripture into the teaching of Jesus Christ. Experiential learning can only occur when individuals make connections between prior knowledge and experiences as they utilize them in developing new knowledge (Merriam & Baumgartner,2020).
Despite their unwillingness to learn, Jesus continues to engage them in thinking at a deeper level. During the discussion, Jesus said, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up” (John 2: 19). The pharisees and those who opposed were knowledgeable of the Scripture and the law of Moses, however, they were not able to move from the lower level of Bloom’s taxonomy into higher order thinking of what was communicating. prior knowledge can sometimes hinder learning if individuals are unwilling to transform and change their worldview (Merriam & Baumgartner,2020). Their level of thinking was reflected in their response which was, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple and will you raise it up in three days?” (John 2: 19). Jesus was discussing about the spiritual house, however, the Pharisees were focused on the physical as they were unable to make the connection between the spiritual and the physical. The Pharisees and those who oppose Jesus may not have been ready to engage in higher-order thinking skills. For individuals to engage in andragogy, they must be ready to engage in adult learning (Mckeachie & Svinicki, 2014).
