Midsummer Nights Dream and The Idea of Love

Order Description

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
and the Idea of Love
One recurring motif in A Midsummer Night’s Dream is love. How is it defined? What
does it mean to be in love? What does it mean to love someone? How does love
affect lovers? How does love affect
people around the lovers? Is love really blind?
What are the differences between young love
and mature love?
This week, I want you to identify and
interview two different couples that
you know: one including two people
who have “loved” each other for less than two
years, and one involving two people who
have “loved” each other for more than ten years. I place “love” in quotation marks in this
context because I want you to formulate your definition of the term based on your answers
to the questions above. Your goal in your interviews will be to find out what love means to
each couple.
Generate and organize your interview questions after a careful reading of the play.
Consider the points of intersection between play and life that you may want to
explore; then create a list of about four or
five questions you will ask each couple. The
interviews should be focused rather than broad,
concentrating on depth of understanding rather
than on breadth of coverage. Take notes from each
interview. Then rewrite your notes, organizing the
main points of the interviews, what you learned
from them and the conclusions you drew from
them.
After the interviews, write a definition of love from your interviewee’s points of view,
a contrast between the two couples’ views of love, and a comparison of these views
to the views of the lovers in the play. Support your analysis with evidence from the
interviews and from the play. This will constitute your initial post for the week.
Post your initial response; then respond to the posts of three classmates.
