Report Scenario;Which standard (Australian Professional Standards for Teachers) would you choose to use this as evidence for, and why?

Write a statement using the standard and choose the information from the scenario you would use as evidence to show how you have met it.

You are ready to plan a series of experiences for the children you are working with as a result of your observations. Many children have shown a great deal of interest in moving shadows on the walls of trees in the garden when there is sun on the wall in the morning, but not in the afternoon.

You have listened to what the children have been saying, and the words they are using to describe what they see. You have noted the children’s spontaneous explanations about where shadows come from, and the reasons they have expressed about why the shadows might move, and why they aren’t there in the afternoon when you have asked questions. You have observed some children experimenting with their own shadows outside and inside using hands and whole body. One child has shown you a video she made at home using her mother’s iPhone, of shadows from a bush outside a window moving on the kitchen table at breakfast. An Indigenous child has brought a video of a traditional dance in the sunset with shadows of the dancers moving on the sandy desert near Alice Springs, and a child with Indonesian heritage has brought in some shadow puppets, and shared the story they are used for.

The resources you are planning to use are: chalk and black, white and yellow paint with large brushes and paper that covers a large part of the wall for outside, a lamp and sheet hung inside with puppets and objects, 3 available digital cameras and an iPad, and 2 big torches.

TASK:

Which standard (Australian Professional Standards for Teachers) would you choose to use this as evidence for, and why?
Please use the following website on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers as it is a useful website for this assignment:
http://www.aitsl.edu.au/australian-professional-standards-for-teachers/standards/list
Write a statement using the standard and choose the information from the scenario you would use as evidence to show how you have met it.
How to approach the task
1. Read the scenario carefully and think about what information it contains.

2. Look at the Australian Standard for Teachers. There are three ‘layers’ in the standards for you to consider.

a. Which of the three domains do you think it might apply to? (Professional Knowledge, Professional Practice or Professional Engagement). Ask yourself why you have chosen the domain(s) you have.

b. Look at the standards under the domain you have chosen and decide which you think might be relevant. For example, if you think it might apply to the Professional Knowledge domain, do you think it best fits Standard 1 or Standard 2, or both? Again, ask yourself why you have chosen the standard(s) you have.

c. Look at the focus areas under the standard you have chosen and carefully read what you would be evidencing with the scenario information. For example, if you have chosen Standard 2, would it be evidence of focus area 2.3? That is, does it show that you can use curriculum, assessment and reporting knowledge to design learning sequences and lesson plans? If you think yes, how does it show that? If the answer is no, then look at the other focus areas in that standard. Do any of these apply?

3. Work your way through the domains, standards and focus areas. Make a list of those you’ve chosen. Did you find that you could use this information to meet more than one focus area? If so, look at which one you think it would best fit and write down why you think that.
4. Use the standard and focus area you have chosen as the best fit and look at the wording in it.
For example, (and this is a random example, not ‘the answer’ for the task!) if you look at Standard 2.3, it talks about:
• curriculum, assessment and reporting knowledge. There are three different ideas here. Then it says that any of these three things could be used to either:
• design learning sequences and/or lesson plans
So you could use your knowledge of the curriculum in designing a learning sequence or designing a
lesson plan.
You could use your knowledge of assessment in designing a learning sequence or designing a
lesson plan.
You could use your knowledge of reporting in designing a learning sequence or designing a lesson plan.

When you write a statement using the standard, you use this wording to say what it is that you going to present evidence about. Use ‘active’ verbs – you have/can etc. So for example, you could write:
Next, you write your evidence to show HOW you have met that statement. What have you done that shows you have used your knowledge of the curriculum to design a lesson plan?

CONNECTING BACK TO THE TASK
This is what we are asking you to do for the task this week.
Chose the domain, standard and focus area under that standard that you think the scenario evidences, and write a standard statement and the evidence to meet it.
