Read Ali Madanipour, “People in the City” in Design of Urban Space: An Inquiry Into a Social-Spatial Process, 63-69

Respond by answering the following questions based on the reading in a substantial paragraph each. As always, please try to include unique examples, personal insight, and other further elaboration in your answers. Do not copy what the author says, but rather translate the ideas into your own interpretation that reveals understanding.

Question 1: The reading mentions that the urban environment is largely a “mental construct.” What does this mean? What are some of the factors that can affect one’s mental construct and how one sees the city? Using these criteria, give an example of how two people would have different mentally constructed perspectives of the same location.

Question 2: What is meant by “use significance”? How does it relate to the whole idea of mentally constructed environments? How does it help someone navigate their way around a city? What are some things that have “use significance” for you?
