1:Did Nagasaki Experience a Disaster?
Order Description
The atomic bomb
ings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
in August 1945 were
enormously destructive events. Together, they killed over 100 000 people,
destroyed urban
infrastructures, contam
inated landscapes, and traumatized
populations. They raised deep and persistent questions about morality,
responsibility, and global survival. But were they disasters? And if so,
in what
way?
In this assignment:
1. Make an argument that answers the follow
ing question: on August 9,
1945, did Nagasaki experience a disaster? In mak
ing your argument,
you should:
• be clear about how you are def
ining “disaster”.
• address possible objections: can disasters be
intentional, for
example? do they have to be unexpected? for whom?
• expla
in how we should understand the event. If it wasn’t a disaster,
how should we characterize it? If there was a disaster, what k
ind of
disaster was it?
2. **PLEASE USE EXAMPLES FROM THE READINGS ( PDFs attached) to support your
argument. Th
ink here about the immediate causes of the bomb
ing of
Nagasaki, as well as its effects and the responses to them. No outside sources are allowed.
