A compare/contrast –an exploratory piece of writing
For this assignment, you will be writing a compare/contrast –an exploratory piece of writing in which you attempt to show readers how two topics are similar, different, or a combination of the two: both similar and different. Whether you focus exclusively on comparing, exclusively on contrasting, or a mix of both, is totally up to you. However, regardless of which approach you decide to take, you will want to include a strong thesis/claim statement, at least three effective supporting points, and a streamlined point-by-point organizational strategy.
Sample Answer
Here is a compare/contrast essay on the topics of race in the media and body image in the media:
Thesis: The media’s portrayal of race and body image has both similarities and differences. While both topics are often stereotyped and unrealistic, the media’s portrayal of race has a more significant impact on society.
Supporting Point 1: Both race and body image are often stereotyped in the media. For example, Black people are often portrayed as criminals or athletes, while white people are often portrayed as successful or intelligent. Similarly, women are often portrayed as being thin and beautiful, while men are often portrayed as being muscular and powerful.
Supporting Point 2: The media’s portrayal of race and body image can have a negative impact on people’s self-esteem. For example, a study by the Center for the Study of Media and Society found that Black girls who are exposed to negative stereotypes in the media are more likely to have low self-esteem. Similarly, a study by the National Eating Disorders Association found that women who are exposed to unrealistic body images in the media are more likely to develop eating disorders.
