Choose a thesis that will present a specific argument about your interpretation of the novel. Choose direct
examples from the text that will support that thesis. In A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway makes excellent
use of secondary characters to show Frederic Henry’s state of mind and development. Excluding Catherine, choose one of these secondary characters (e.g. Rinaldi, the Priest, Greffi, Ettore, Miss Gage, Aymo) and trace that character’s importance to the plot and the protagonist.
