A Good Man is Hard to find A Rose for Emily

You are to choose any one or two of the readings we read in the short fiction portion of your syllabus or supplemental readings and develop a theme or approach for writing. For example, if you can explore religion as an underlying theme in A Rose for Emily or justice in A Good Man is Hard to find, etc. You are free to do a thematic comparison of two stories provided it fits into the four-page paper; however, if you'd like, you can focus on the formalist approach, which means you will look at how either setting, plot, irony, symbolism, etc., influence the narratives. Additionally, you might also be interested in what the narratives say about the writer's consciousness or artistic imagination. Over the course of the weekend, I ask that you select the story (stories), work out an approach (topic), and begin outlining or strategizing your paper. I am available to meet during office hours or by appointment. Note: This paper is due March 3, 2020; the two-page response paper is not due until the week of Spring Break.
