The Link Between Lead Exposure and Asthma in Children
Lead is a toxic metal that can cause a variety of health problems, including brain damage, learning disabilities, and hearing loss. Children are especially vulnerable to lead exposure, as their bodies are still developing.
A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that children who were exposed to lead in their homes were more likely to develop asthma. The study looked at data from over 1,000 children in Boston, and found that those who had lead levels in their blood of 5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) or higher were twice as likely to develop asthma as those who had lead levels of less than 1 µg/dL.
