Perform a close read and analysis of A Place to Stand and produce an analytical paper. We have discussed a number of significant issues in our class that directly connect to the book including: family, education, money, power, and equality/race. Additionally you may want to consider: love, loss, language, anger, violence, fear, culture, or society (environment). You may choose a maximum of two issues/themes (from those listed or of your own with prior approval by me) for your paper to focus on. You will explain the significance of these issues/themes to the identity of the main character/author and you may explain how these themes are important to the book itself (i.e. the development and structure). Your paper should directly cite (through direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary, as appropriate) a minimum of 4 specific scenes that demonstrate/support your claim for each issue/theme. Each example should be supported with critical thinking that explains the significance of the scene as is relates to your ideas. In your conclusion make a final statement that clearly identifies why what has been shown in your essay is important to the meaning of the novel.
Audience:
In the most literal sense I am your audience. In a more general sense readers of the book are your audience. You should assume that the reader of your paper is familiar with the text and does not require you to summarize excessively. You should quote directly from the text knowing your reader will be able to contextualize the situation, but do not assume the reader shares your interpretation of the text. Your thesis should make a clear arguable claim that identifies the theme(s) you are addressing and why they are significant.
