Descriptive Narrative

The academic descriptive narrative will be, oddly enough, a narrative that uses descriptive writin" rel="nofollow">ing with an academic tone/language. The medium is up to you to choose, but you must in" rel="nofollow">include a written transcript of your narrative project that reveals narrative structure if you choose an alternative to writin" rel="nofollow">ing. Example of Rhetorical Plan Worksheet Genre: Narrative Sub-genre: Comedy Purpose: to illustrate gender roles’ power Audience: those who do not realize gender affects us as strongly as it does Audience values: comfort in" rel="nofollow">in society, gender rules allow normalcy Plan: story will be humorous, which will allow me to discuss an uncomfortable topic in" rel="nofollow">in a more comfortable manner for my audience Structure Background: in" rel="nofollow">introduce the settin" rel="nofollow">ing (my livin" rel="nofollow">ing situation, roommates, rooms), my thoughts (experimentin" rel="nofollow">ing with gender by stealin" rel="nofollow">ing the high heels) Action: stealin" rel="nofollow">ing the heels, tryin" rel="nofollow">ing to walk in" rel="nofollow">in them, movin" rel="nofollow">ing to livin" rel="nofollow">ing room, my male roommates’ reactions Dilemma: male roommates’ reactions and threats to kick me out of the apartment Resolution: explain" rel="nofollow">ined experiment and why, manly activities resume Thesis: demonstrate the extreme reaction to bendin" rel="nofollow">ing gender expectations and discuss how and why these rules create normalcy and, when disrupted, agitation Example of Annotated Writin" rel="nofollow">ing Benjamin" rel="nofollow">in Carlton 15 September 2016 Dude, You Can’t Throw a Perfect Spiral in" rel="nofollow">in 5-in" rel="nofollow">inch Pumps: Revealin" rel="nofollow">ing Gender Expectations and Effects So there I was about to in" rel="nofollow">invade in" rel="nofollow">into my female roommate’s room. I had never been in" rel="nofollow">in her room before because usually I am respectful about other people’s spaces, but I was out of options. I had to go in" rel="nofollow">in there, for science of course. I have a flashback in" rel="nofollow">in that moment of Ron Burgandy, the co-anchor newscaster from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy, who declares the irrefutable maxim, “It’s science.” No more justification is needed. I creep in" rel="nofollow">into the unknown domicile of femin" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">inity, immediately noticin" rel="nofollow">ing a more pleasant smell, cleaned floors, and the noticeable lack of clothes or items on the floor. ‘Aha!’ I thin" rel="nofollow">ink to myself, ‘gender stereotypes that females should be clean prove to make my theft easier!’ and I softly shut the door behin" rel="nofollow">ind me so my two other male roommates do not notice my crime. Commented [BC1]: Begin" rel="nofollow">innin" rel="nofollow">ing with “Dude” in" rel="nofollow">initiates the gendered narrative by usin" rel="nofollow">ing gendered terms. Also, the juxtaposition of gender stereotypes of football’s perfect spiral (male) and 5 in" rel="nofollow">inch heels (female) also demonstrates the forthcomin" rel="nofollow">ing gender roles clash that I in" rel="nofollow">initiate in" rel="nofollow">in the narrative. Commented [BC2]: The use of in" rel="nofollow">invade creates in" rel="nofollow">interest as it is an in" rel="nofollow">interestin" rel="nofollow">ing verb that in" rel="nofollow">insin" rel="nofollow">inuates to the audience some sort of action is shortly goin" rel="nofollow">ing to occur that will be contested. The contest will not be what they expect (i.e. between me and my female roommate) but rather between male and female gender expectations. Commented [BC3]: By citin" rel="nofollow">ing a comedy, I am alignin" rel="nofollow">ing my own narrative with the comedic for my audience. Commented [BC4]: This is, of course, not irrefutable, but my use of the complex terms and the illustration of some people’s in" rel="nofollow">inability to consider topics more deeply is foreshadowin" rel="nofollow">ing the same behavior in" rel="nofollow">in my audience with gender roles. Commented [BC5]: As this narrative is about gender, I immediately in" rel="nofollow">introduce the concept of the femin" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">ine along with some of the more usual gender roles for it, which will make my audience understand the narrative is about gender as well as illustrate a few of the femin" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">ine roles. Commented [BC6]: With this action, I close the paragraph and am ready to move on, brin" rel="nofollow">ingin" rel="nofollow">ing my audience with me as I get ready to in" rel="nofollow">initiate the action of tryin" rel="nofollow">ing on the heels and walkin" rel="nofollow">ing out in" rel="nofollow">into the livin" rel="nofollow">ing room. Havin" rel="nofollow">ing established my subject and my moral goodness that aligns with my audience.
