Order Description
The Assignment:
For the purposes of this assignment the term ‘social enterprise’ should be broadly conceived and in" rel="nofollow">include for in" rel="nofollow">instance firms run by in" rel="nofollow">individual social entrepreneurs, employee-owned companies, mutuals, co-operatives, benefit corporations and ‘green’ companies (i.e. firms that are clearly and rigorously committed to full environmental sustain" rel="nofollow">inability).
Relevant Factors
There is a choice of four questions but for all of the questions you must in" rel="nofollow">include discussion of at least three (and preferably more) of the followin" rel="nofollow">ing factors:-
a. The availability of suitable legal organisational forms;
b. Direct government support, such as fin" rel="nofollow">inancial aid;
c. Indirect government support, for in" rel="nofollow">instance legislation/guidance on procurement for social value;
d. Current provision of public services, and the likely changes in" rel="nofollow">in that provision;
e. The range, quality and likely changes in" rel="nofollow">in the provision of services by third sector / social economy organisations;
f. The availability of suitable sources of in" rel="nofollow">income and/or in" rel="nofollow">investment;
g. The range and quality of in" rel="nofollow">intermediary support organisations (for in" rel="nofollow">instance for in" rel="nofollow">incubation, mentorin" rel="nofollow">ing or scalin" rel="nofollow">ing up); if appropriate, in" rel="nofollow">include discussion of the consequences of competition or collaboration between in" rel="nofollow">intermediaries;
h. The media and cultural climate, in" rel="nofollow">includin" rel="nofollow">ing for in" rel="nofollow">instance social movements if relevant.
Choose one question.
1. Compare the development of two separate social enterprises. Your evidence can in" rel="nofollow">include your own experience, published material and/or other data you have gathered for in" rel="nofollow">instance through in" rel="nofollow">interviews. Choose two reasonably comparable enterprises and clearly justify your choice. You should aim to evaluate the factors affectin" rel="nofollow">ing development and to draw conclusions of use to practitioners, in" rel="nofollow">intermediary support organisations and policy-makers.
2. Choose one specific sector of social enterprise, such as work-in" rel="nofollow">integration, healthcare, creative & cultural, social housin" rel="nofollow">ing, homelessness, children & young people, fairtrade, ethical consumer goods, credit unions, adult social care, prisons & rehabilitation, transport, recyclin" rel="nofollow">ing, charitable tradin" rel="nofollow">ing arms, leisure services, library services, renewable energy, etc. (This list is not exhaustive). For that sector, describe and evaluate the most important factors in" rel="nofollow">in sustain" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">ing and developin" rel="nofollow">ing the sector and new enterprises within" rel="nofollow">in it. You should aim to draw conclusions of use to in" rel="nofollow">intermediary support organisations, policy-makers and practitioners.
3. Compare the overall general potential for social enterprise in" rel="nofollow">in two different nations (or states within" rel="nofollow">in a federation such as USA, or regions within" rel="nofollow">in nations with significant devolution such as Belgium, Spain" rel="nofollow">in or UK). You should derive policy-focussed recommendations for one or both countries.
