The topic of my thesis is aiming to be Texas Cemeteries.
I’m hoping to explore potentially three different cemeteries within the same time frame (possibly 1850-1950 Texas) looking at hierarchy, social and cultural aspects with regards to cemeteries. I want to see what type of roles politics played within a cemetery. What impact if any does selective preservation play? I aim to explore how power struggles play into the cemetery. Why are some people better taken care of than others, why do people view certain graves or individuals as being more important than another when ultimately they have all ended up in the same place? Lastly, I’m considering looking at the evolution of graves and their markers, who made the headstones, what was the delivery ranges (why do we see so many of the same styles and types in different cemeteries) and what kind of prices were charged?
