Assignment Instructions - Amazon HQ2
In September 2017, Amazon invited cities/municipalities in North America to submit their proposals to be
chosen as the site for a second headquarters. Amazon's original headquarters is located in Seattle and it was
widely thought at the time that Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon was looking to create a corporate presence on
the East Coast. There was a tremendous response to the call for proposals with many municipal areas seeking
to be chosen as the second headquarters..
Fast forward, three years and we know that Amazon chose Long Island City in NYC as their choice as well as
Crystal City in the Virginia/
Washington DC area. The company made the decision for two new headquarters based on the availability of
local talent. However, based on political pressure brought to bear by local politicians, Amazon decided against
NY.
The attached RFP (Request for Proposals) is a master class in the topics covered in this Principles of
Management class. It is a carefully constructed document that offers insight into the management process,
strategy, decision making, planning, negotiation, leadership and the relationship between business and politics.
Based on the RFP and any additional research which you choose to do please address the following
questions.

  1. What are the advantages to the city that was chosen for Amazon's second headquarters similar to the
advantages that were made in Seattle? (please include employment, tax revenue, housing, benefits to other
businesses in the area, quality of life for Amazon employees and families)
  2. Describe the physical, transportation and construction requirements for the new headquarters.
  3. Managers and the Management Process: comment on the thought processes that brought Amazon to the
conclusion that a second headquarter was needed.
  4. Managers as Decision Makers/Planners: comment on at least 3 decisions that are part of the proposal and 3
plans that are described to implement them.
  5. Ethics and Social Responsibility: comment on the social and ethical responsibilities that Amazon and its host
city have to residents of the surrounding area, employees, customers and shareholders.
  6. Discuss the pros and cons of the decision for Amazon to drop out of NYC especially since the element of the
    pandemic has been added.
