F rom then on, parents and children are required to be detained together for an indefinite period rather than holding the children by themselves in detention facilities (Shear et al., 2018). Howe ver, Ari Shapiro explains that “while the (family separation) policy was in effect, more than 2,50 minors were taken from their parents or caregivers” (Burnett, 2019). Other wise known as the “zero-tolerance” policy, officials were required to criminally prosecute each person that crosses the border illegally, where parents and children were kept separate while their legal cases were considered by the courts (Shear et al., 2018).
As stated by Sesanker (n.d.), “so far, the theories that we have considered have primarily focused on rules concerning what we should and shouldn’t do, rather than on who we should and shouldn’t be”. Virtue theory, on the other hand, focuses on the function of humans to use reason in order to flourish (Sesanker, n.d.). In order to flourish, a person must develop certain excellences of character (virtues) that allow them to function harmoniously as social and political beings (Sesanker, n.d.). Therefore, according to virtue theory, politics are necessary for a supporting society to exist in order for a person to live a virtuous life (Sesanker, n.d.). As stated by Sandel (209), “ only in the political association, Aristotle claims, can we exercise our distinctly human capacity for language, for only in polis do we deliberate with others about justice and injustice and the nature of the good life” (p. )961
Immigration certainly proves to be a tough issue to tackle, as there is no right answer. Instead, politicians attempt to find the most reasonable solution. Illegal immigrants gamble their chances of successfully entering the United States because their home country is unsafe for them and their children. In order to live a virtuous life, they seek asylum in the United States. Strict policies are necessary in order to prevent an overwhelming amount of illegal immigrants from entering the country, and also to avoid letting in any dangerous criminals.
