Tasks - Analysis, Structure, and Content
This analysis asks you to answer a few key questions. Some answers will be a paragraph, while others might
be multiple pages in length. As you tour the museum please answer the following questions:
Describe the space, building, and physical environment.
Describe the contents in general terms. Is this a museum with a comprehensive collection, displaying materials
from all times and cultures, or is this a gallery specializing, for example, in paintings by contemporary Native
American artists?
Select 3 distinctly different works of art that interested you during your visit. Read their wall labels and describe
each work using 1 – 3 paragraphs per piece. Cite the wall cards if you use their exact wording. Include a visual
analysis of the works you choose for this assignment.
Curators and exhibit designers will often use various tools and devices to guide visitors to look at particular
objects or paintings. For example, if they spent $8 million on a statue, they want to make sure people see their
treasure. Knowing this, please identify specific exhibits or pieces of art you think this gallery or museum values
most. How can you tell? What things have been done to focus your attention on the most significant point?
Observe the behavior of other visitors. How do they act while in the museum?
Finally, describe the overall experience. How does a thoughtful, deliberate, and planned visiting experience
assist you in seeing what you are supposed to see?
