Analyze children books

Examine the kinds of books read to children or read by children and young adolescents and to consider the implicit and explicit messages they absorb from this literature about the values their society holds. You should understand the role of context in the growth and development of children and adolescents and their socialization by family, community, society, and culture

    b) How do you think a child from a different cultural background would respond to these books (are the concepts, values etc. universal)? Or how do you think a child from a disadvantaged background (low income, maltreatment, developmental disability) would respond to these books (are these concepts, values, etc. applicable to everyone’s lives)? (3 points)
    c) Which books would you want to read to children in your care and why? Which ones would you choose not to read to children in your care and why? (3 points)

    e) Finally, describe how you think that books and media, in general, can affect the values that children and adolescents have. (3 points)

Sample Solution

Books read to and by children and young adolescents are often the primary source of socialization during these formative years. While some books may contain implicit messages of societal values, many others offer direct lessons about the world around them. The context in which a book is read can play a big role in how its messages are interpreted. For example, if a family or school environment is full of positive reinforcements for diversity, equity, and inclusion this could be reflected in the types of literature chosen for kids to engage with whether it be fiction or nonfiction topics related to those themes.
