Master project: was about language and gender in Saudi Arabia specifically about identity construction of women through speech. I did this project in less than a year where there is little literature about this topic in Saudi Arabia. I worked on the project using language and gender, discourse analysis. This project is among the first to closely look at young Saudi women who are linguistically constructing their identity. I used a discourse analysis approach and discovered features that characterize the speech of women across different settings. This project – translated over 300 pages of speech. transcribed audio and phonetically. Analyzed as well.

Brief Information about linguistics:
This degree has provided me with a strong background in many aspects. The study of linguistics is essentially the study of human language. Grammar: the study of language structure and the system of rules it uses. It includes several fields as follows. Morphology: the study of the formation of words. Syntax: the study of the formation and composition of these words into phrases and sentences. Phonology: the study of sound systems. Phonetics is a related field concerned with the properties, production, and perception of speech and non-speech sounds. Semantics: the study of word meaning. Historical linguistics: the study of language evolution over time. Sociolinguistics: the study of how language is used in society. Linguistics addresses addressing all the functions of language. One must determine the grammar being used, the meaning of the words as individual components, as well as the phrases and sentences they create, how those phrases are placed in time and history, and so forth. A linguistics background is an advantage for a bilingual. Linguists study the semantic, syntactic and stylistic differences between languages, as well as the relations between language and culture. This knowledge helps a linguist to understand the issues involved in trying to express equivalent meanings in two languages.

Skills gained after studying linguistics:

Think critically
• Demonstrate the ability to analyze problems, both linguistic and otherwise, and to find and critically evaluate alternative solutions
Write effectively
• Demonstrate the ability to present ideas in effectively written form
Research
• Demonstrate the ability to find in textbooks and research materials, the kinds of information relevant to a given problem or issue, linguistic or otherwise, and to integrate that information into one’s own written work to support one’s argument while giving appropriate credit to the source of the information
Knowledge of linguistics subdisciplines
• Have a working knowledge of the subdisciplines of linguistics dealing with the organization of language, i.e., phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics
• Have a working knowledge of the subdisciplines of linguistics dealing with language use, change and acquisition, especially sociolinguistics, historical linguistics and psycholinguistics

Excellent understanding of the issues involved in communication across languages and cultures

Students who major in linguistics acquire valuable intellectual skills, such as analytical reasoning, critical thinking, argumentation, and clarity of expression. This means making insightful observations, formulating clear, testable hypotheses, generating predictions, making arguments and drawing conclusions, and communicating findings to a wider community. Linguistics majors are therefore well equipped for a variety of graduate-level and professional programs and careers.
