You have three options. Please label your reaction paper A or B at the beginning of your answer.
A) This is a two-part response. First, argue how Akira OR Patlabor 2 reflects the problems/issues in the politics and society of postwar Japan. Use examples
from the film and reading to support your argument.
Second, identify an idiosyncratic animator from either of these films and describe their style for animating movement using examples from the film. How
does their animation complement or amplify the political or social themes of the film?
B) Silvio argues that Ghost in the Shell “subverts radically the power dynamics inherent in dominant structures of gender and sexual difference, while covertly
reinscribing them” (56). In other words, he argues that the film appears progressive while actually being conservative towards gender and sexual
representation. Write whether you agree or disagree with this argument, and whether the image of the cyborg/net represented in the film is a symbol of
liberation or suppression.
