Discipline(s): Tourism (economics, sociology and anthropology)
Key question: What economic, environmental and social problems exist in developing and managing tourism in outlying regions?
Theoretical/applied Applied Experimental/non-experimental Non-experimental
Empirical/non-empirical Empirical Primary/secondary data Primary
Deductive/inductive Deductive (surveys) and Inductive (interviews) Self-reported/observed Self-reported
Descriptive/explanatory Descriptive Qualitative/quantitative Both (qualitative interviews and quantitative survey)
Concise annotation
Hohl & Tisdell (1995) outline the economic, environmental, and social problems encountered in developing and managing tourism in peripheral regions. The research uses economic impact assessment techniques, surveys and interviews. The results identify large economic leakages from tourism expenditures; difficulties in providing and maintaining touristic infrastructure; and managing its environmental conservation and social impacts. Cape York Peninsula (Australia) was seen as a good case study area because of its distance from large urban centers, is relatively underdeveloped, and contains a large indigenous population.
