ART 102 VISUAL ANALYSIS PAPER
Note: You will write 2 papers. The first is due at the midpoin" rel="nofollow">int in" rel="nofollow">in the course and the other is due at the end.
Summary: A 2-3 page formal analysis of a work of art. The work must be from the regions and time period covered by the course. (See the Course Description in" rel="nofollow">in the syllabus.) You must see the work
of art in" rel="nofollow">in-person, You must submit a selfie taken in" rel="nofollow">in front_ofite artwork or c. h t vou took in" rel="nofollow">in the museum must be in" rel="nofollow">included with) paper). In order to write a successful paper, you should spend at
least 30 min" rel="nofollow">inutes standin" rel="nofollow">ing in" rel="nofollow">in the room in" rel="nofollow">in front of the art v,7ork carefully examin" rel="nofollow">inin" rel="nofollow">ing it.
Objective: This assignment will acquain" rel="nofollow">int you with analyzin" rel="nofollow">ing and describin" rel="nofollow">ing a work of art, as well as usin" rel="nofollow">ing primary sources (the work of art) as well as research in" rel="nofollow">in at least one credible secondary
source. See Research Tools for lin" rel="nofollow">inks to help you fin" rel="nofollow">ind good secondary sources. The research in" rel="nofollow">in secondary sources will develop in" rel="nofollow">informational literacy.

Instructions_ This assignment will require that you see the work of art in" rel="nofollow">in-person. While standin" rel="nofollow">ing in" rel="nofollow">in front of the work, describe it in" rel="nofollow">in as much detail as you can. Focus on details that you would not
be abe to see in" rel="nofollow">in a photograph. Try W analyze how the artist achieves the fin" rel="nofollow">inal composition by carefully detailin" rel="nofollow">ing how s/he utilizes the "formal" elements of the work (i.e. color, composition, es or
forms, lin" rel="nofollow">ine or contour, mass and volume, light, texture, depth, balance, etc.) and these elements work together to create the fin" rel="nofollow">inal composition as to shape the content and meanin" rel="nofollow">ing. (Refer to
Barnet's A Short Guide to Writin" rel="nofollow">ing About Art for details.) Note: A urn of 20% of the paper in" rel="nofollow">in cited research will be allowed_ This in" rel="nofollow">information must be: (1) paraphrased in" rel="nofollow">in your own words and (2)
