Choose one of the following questions and write an essay of 1500 words maximum EXCLUDING the bibliography. How do media texts construct their own audience? You should refer to at least 2 specific examples to illustrate your answer. How useful is the concept of ‘media panic’ when trying to understand public concerns about media? Use examples to support your argument. What research methods have been used to assess how media effects or influences people and what does this tell us about the way the audience is positioned in such research? Hall argues that audiences either adopt the dominant reading of a text, a negotiated reading of a text or an oppositional reading. Referring to a media text of your choice, explain what each reading might look like and critically reflect on the usefulness of Hall’s argument. Critically evaluate the idea that children and young people often need additional protection from certain kinds of media texts. You should refer to relevant examples or cases in your answer. Audience research is traditionally focused on the way people respond to or make use of media texts. To what extent do these theories and methods allow us to make sense of digital media users?
