Asian and American literature analysis
Asian and American literature analysis
Order Description
This paper focuses on a sin" rel="nofollow">ingle or several texts—literature and/or film—of the semester thus far.?choose one from Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro. The Good Earth, Pearl S. Buck. Re Jane, Patricia Park? This analytical paper follows the MLA format: prin" rel="nofollow">inted in" rel="nofollow">in 12-poin" rel="nofollow">int font, double-spaced, with 1" margin" rel="nofollow">ins on all sides, unjustified on the right-hand side, stapled, and prin" rel="nofollow">inted on one side only. Pagin" rel="nofollow">inate throughout. This is a paper of close readin" rel="nofollow">ing and critical analysis. Devise your own paper title on the basis of the myriad of topics we have discussed in" rel="nofollow">in class as well as those provided below; however, you are advised to go beyond these suggestions and make up your own title, thesis, and argument, as long as your paper is well-argued based on textual evidence.
Followin" rel="nofollow">ing a concise, illumin" rel="nofollow">inatin" rel="nofollow">ing title that in" rel="nofollow">includes specific text(s), your in" rel="nofollow">introduction would open briefly with the context of your argument, main" rel="nofollow">in poin" rel="nofollow">ints of the chosen text(s), and a strong thesis and in" rel="nofollow">insights. Give quotes to substantiate your argument, but do so only when you are ready to closely read those cited passages for imagery, language, theme, refrain" rel="nofollow">in, rhythm, and so forth. A strong paper must demonstrate clarity, force, grace, and origin" rel="nofollow">inality of thought. Do not summarize the plot for the sake of plot summary; rather, recast certain" rel="nofollow">in episodes succin" rel="nofollow">inctly in" rel="nofollow">in your own words in" rel="nofollow">in order to tease out an in" rel="nofollow">innovative idea, one that is neither a repeat of the plot nor of the class discussion. Put simply, be a Houdin" rel="nofollow">ini: don the straitjacket of the plot in" rel="nofollow">in order to escape from it, to flee in" rel="nofollow">into your own reconceptualization of the texts. Elimin" rel="nofollow">inate overly personal, subjective voice in" rel="nofollow">in academic discourse. Avoid, as well, a pompous, high-flown style, marked by turgid and flowery expressions and the paucity of origin" rel="nofollow">inal thought. Be precise and concise.
Demonstrate in" rel="nofollow">in this critical paper your in" rel="nofollow">insights in" rel="nofollow">into our texts. Strike a balance between generality and particularity, between quotation/plot and analysis, and between bold, unique ideas and methodical textual analysis. Note that the thesis statement must be one that could be sustain" rel="nofollow">ined throughout the paper. Outside sources are not necessary; check with me if you have such needs. Plagiarism would result in" rel="nofollow">in failin" rel="nofollow">ing the course and an academic dishonest report in" rel="nofollow">in the student’s record. Seek a pair of fresh eyes from the Writin" rel="nofollow">ing Center to critique and edit your paper. Include the word count in" rel="nofollow">in a parenthesis at the end of the paper.
This is to be electronically submitted to D2L’s dropbox on “Paper 2”; make sure the Word file of your submission is entitled “Last Name, First Name.”
Some sample ideas. We have covered some and will cover others in" rel="nofollow">in class:
1.One wonders if Ishiguro’s novel embodies postethnicity, yet it can be construed as a mask for ethnicity, veilin" rel="nofollow">ing one’s origin" rel="nofollow">inary loss of home and identity. How do you view this? What proof can you marshal in" rel="nofollow">in support of your argument?
2.Write a “grammar” or stylistic analysis of Konglish in" rel="nofollow">in Patricia Park’s Re Jane. Park’s language, particularly dialogues of American and Korean characters, shuttles between the English and Korean languages, resultin" rel="nofollow">ing in" rel="nofollow">in a hybrid pidgin" rel="nofollow">in. Are there specific rules or a certain" rel="nofollow">in style in" rel="nofollow">in Park’s rendition of Uncle Sang’s English or Aunt Emo’s Korean (which is always italicized to help readers “see through” its Englishness)? How about other characters: Changhoon, Beth, Ed, Eunice, amongst the wide range of cast? Analyze Park’s style in" rel="nofollow">in animatin" rel="nofollow">ing the cross-cultural communication. Or is Park simply takin" rel="nofollow">ing advantage of immigrants’ voicelessness and lack of representation to make up whatever she sees fit, vergin" rel="nofollow">ing on a caricature of immigrants’ atrocious English? Or is there another in" rel="nofollow">interpretation of Park’s Konglish?
3. We have several films toward the end of the semester from very different genres. Whether sci-fi or anime, whether adult thriller or children’s film, cultural struggles of East and West, old and young, human and superman seem to run through all of them. This fits well the course’s focus on “Asian Diaspora/Asian American Literature and Film.” Zoom in" rel="nofollow">in on one of these contendin" rel="nofollow">ing cultural forces. Construct a thesis around it. Analyze how such a cultural force is played out cin" rel="nofollow">inematographically.
4. Compare Ishiguro’s whiteface novel with Buck’s yellowface novel. Race lies behin" rel="nofollow">ind both writers’ “passin" rel="nofollow">ing.” Their imagin" rel="nofollow">inary worlds, characters, mannerisms, and speech acts are drastically different. Analyze textual evidence to demonstrate how these divergin" rel="nofollow">ing fictional universes are created.
5. Explore the theme of love and emotions. Affections seem equally repressed among Ishiguro’s clones and Buck’s Chin" rel="nofollow">inese characters. Human bondin" rel="nofollow">ing manifests itself in" rel="nofollow">in yet another different way in" rel="nofollow">in Park’s ethnic home-comin" rel="nofollow">ing, self-discovery journey. Create an argument on this recurrin" rel="nofollow">ing theme.
