Autoliv's Lean Systems Discussion Topic

The Toyota Corporation was one of the first companies to employ a lean systems approach. The company's just-in-time (JIT) method, originated by Taiichi Ohno, the father of the Toyota Production System (TPS), identified eight wastes, or mudas, to be eliminated, including excessive inventory, extraneous process steps, and defective products. Many companies have followed the Toyota example, seeking to perfect the efficiency of their systems through trial and error. Autoliv is an example of a company that followed in Toyota's footsteps.
View the video "Autoliv—Lean Systems" (available through the MyOMLab link on the left-side navigation). Using the Autoliv example, define the concept of lean manufacturing and outline reasons explaining why the company's lean manufacturing techniques are effective. Then conduct a quick internet search to locate another firm that uses lean systems, and share some alternative lean techniques used effectively by this company.
