Beasts of Burden

Part 1

One of the critical issues in part one is the definition of disability that the author provides on page 7. According to Taylor (2017), the meaning of disability keeps changing in the same way the gender and race variates. The current approach leaves a huge gap in establishing the accurate meaning of disability. For instance, there is a need to set a specific threshold of body wellness from which the meaning of disability can be constructed. I fail to understand where I can group a person who has suffered a comma. Can we conclude that a comma patient is disabled? Another vital issue in part 1 is the discouraging of euthanasia suggestion on page 24 cannot always be overlooked. I came across a dog that had no hind limbs which forced the poor animal to crawl. Every time the dog moved, one could imagine the pain and struggle, especially when the animal was unable to defend itself against other dogs.

Question: Is it ethical to watch an animal suffer for life when you save it from pain using euthanasia?

Part 2

Part 2 presents a unique statement that “language separated humans from animals’ (p.38). The argument was borrowed from the philosophical works of Aristotle. Also, hearing is an important process of speech. The author proceeds to explain that Aristotle’s assumption was the reason behind the deaf people being regarded as less human. Today, the philosophical thought cannot apply because the deaf can easily communicate using sign language. The sign language can also be translated to construct speech. People with forms of disability such as blindness and deafness. One cannot bear the pain of imagining the efforts that people underwent to ensure that special education gained a meaningful place in society (p.38). I am always excited to see how the sign language has become an interesting subject. I have come across professionals who were born deaf or blind but are experiencing a wonderful career because they got an opportunity to study using sign language and brail respectively.

Question: Can the introduction of special education to normal children help establish a positive mindset towards supporting the disabled in society?

Please do the same for Parts 3: I am an Animal, Part 4: All Natural and Part 5: Interdependence
