THE BOOK "Beauty Up: Explorin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing Contemporary Japanese Body
Aesthetics" by Laura Miller (2006)
You will write a paper on the ethnography where you explore how the ethnographic
data confirms or challenges the arguments of the social theorists. Your paper should
in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">include verbatim quotes by the theorists (Marx, Weber, Smith, Durkheim, and Bernard)
as well as from the authors of the ethnographies that connect the two materials and
exemplify important poin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ints. All quotes must have a quotation mark around them, and
have the author, year, and page number. Example: 'Men want more and more" (Marx,
1748 :23).
Poin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ints to address:
1. Main" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in poin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ints/arguments of the ethnography, cultural/economic questions it
addresses, give a brief description of the different parts of the ethnography. Ex. Part 1
was about... Part 2.... Part 3... or In Chapter 1....Chapter 2...
2. How does the ethnography put these questions/poin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ints in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">into the context of the social
theories. Here you should give examples of how the author of the ethnography is
usin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing theories and how cultural data are connected to or exemplifyin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing the theories.
What kin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ind of data or evidence does the author use?
3. How is the data confirmin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing or challengin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing the social theories? Show if the author of
the ethnography leans on a body of social theories or if he/she is criticizin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing a theory.
How does he/she criticize it?
4. How does this ethnography add somethin" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">in" rel="nofollow">ing new to your knowledge?
