This assignment asks me to conduct a comparative analysis of two current television series. Compare and contrast two series from the same genre or format (format adaptation/“franchise TV”), examining both the formal and thematic elements of the programs.
One series must be Canadian and I already choose a program (Big Brother Canada). The second series it should be drawn from another national context (Big Brother America). Outline the similarities and differences you note (e.g. style, character, setting, subject matter, texture etc.) and discuss their significance.
The paper analysis should consider the relevance of inflection, imitation, adaptation, and/or circulation and should have a clear thesis that is supported through detailed textual analysis.* What does your analysis reveal about the usefulness (and possible limitations) of comparative analysis in the study of Canadian television?
You are not required to conduct research for this assignment, but you must draw on concepts from the reading in your own analysis of the series you have chosen.
