Book review and reflection
PART ONE
For this task you are required to choose a social work text and write a book review (800 words) as if you were going to submit it for publication in the Journal of Australian Social Work. You will need to review a number of book reviews in this journal and emulate the form and style of this writing.
PART TWO
Following your book review, write a reflective piece (700 words) describing the learning you will take into practice as a result of reading this text. Answer the question: ‘What kind of social worker will I be?’ with reference to any relevant course literature and the book you have reviewed. It is highly recommended you use and cite a social work reflective approach model.
1.Define and evaluate the scope and nature of social work practice and the challenges associated with contemporary social work in your chosen practice area (how does your book fit within the broader literature?)
2.Identify and critique the philosophical underpinnings of contemporary critical practice in human services (what is the theoretical underpinning of your book?)
3.Compare and contrast the value of different theoretical frameworks informing practice (how useful is your book, and the approach it takes, to social work practice?)
4.Apply sophisticated written communication skills to present complex information in accessible and culturally appropriate ways (how well have you written your book review and used your reflective model?)
