Business Statistics

The directions are given in the attachment. This is to be done in Excel. PART I 1. Open the following website: http://www.rug.nl/research/ggdc/data/pwt/pwt-8.1 2. Click on the “Productivity” tab, and then click on “Penn World Table”. Go to “Earlier Releases” and choose “PTW 8.1” 3. Click on “Excel” under the Expert Data Access 4. Make sure you navigate the website to learn about the variables 5. Make sure to SAVE the Excel file in your computer or a flash drive 6. In the excel file that you just downloaded, open a new tab (new sheet at the bottom of the spreadsheet) and generate a random number between 1 and 167 [=randbetween(1,167)]. Drag down this command until you generate 30 random numbers. Highlight the newly created random numbers and copy them in a new column. When pasting the values choose “Paste Special” and then “Values”. The new numbers may change. Please double check that none of the new numbers is repeated. 7. Refer to the list of countries below and add the name to the right of the random number 8. As part of the initial notes, write up the process of creating a new database. PART II 1. With you new list of 30 countries (rows) choose the data for RGDPE, POP, csh_c (columns). Make sure that you know what is the meaning of these variables 2. Create a scatter plot with csh_c (y axis) and RGDPE (x-axis). 3. Calculate the mean value per country for these variables between 1990 and 2011. For instance, if your country is Zambia, type =average( , then go to the data table, locate Zambia, identify the year 1990 for RGDPE, click on it, press the key “shift” and highlight the data down to 2011. Close parenthesis and click ENTER. 4. Repeat this action for the rest of the countries and all variables. 5. Create a frequency distribution table for the variable RGDPE using 5 classes. Create a histogram to determine the underlying distribution. 6. Create other graphs that you consider useful for your analysis 7. Write up your results PART III 1. After filling out your table, calculate the over all mean, variance and standard deviation for your sample. 2. Copy and paste values for RGDPE in a different place or spreadsheet. Make sure you use the “paste special” and “values” function to avoid errors in the calculations. Calculate and explain the 5-number summary (smallest observation, first quartile, median, third quartile and largest observation). Use the excel function =QUARTILE(array, quartile number) to find the quartiles 3. What is the probability that a country will have a RGDPE less than $500,000 (remember these data is in millions, which is equivalent to $500 billion). Use the z-score to calculate this value for your sample. Is it usual or unusual in your sample? 4. Write up your findings PART IV Write a report with this information. Include graphs and create a table with your main results.
