BUSINESS WRITING AND MEMO

Let’s pretend that the College is reviewing the competitiveness of the services of the Lehman College Career Exploration and Development Center (CEDC).

As a member of the Lehman College Strategic Planning Department, your manager has asked you to conduct research and develop a formal memo comparing and contrasting at least one other career services center within CUNY to Lehman’s CEDC. Your report will be organized into sections using the traditional “4 Ps” of marketing (i.e., Product, Price, Promotion, and Place). There is more explanation in the worksheet.

Your formal memo of up to 3 to 5 single-spaced pages will be based on:

Primary research, such as using what you know about Lehman College, what you observe on Lehman’s CEDC website, and what you investigate on the career services websites of other CUNY colleges.

Secondary research, such as professional articles about university career services centers that you find on a Lehman library database.

 •   This assignment does NOT require an in-person visit to Lehman’s CEDC or speaking to the CEDC staff. 

• The audience for your investigative report is NOT other students.
• The worksheet that follows is required. It provides you with a supportive and systematic way of preparing to write. It also helps me to measure your understanding of the writing process and your ability to write persuasively.
• I am NOT asking for a problem/solution paper this semester; if an assignment with this theme is submitted, the paper will receive a zero.

  1. Identify/confirm the audience of the memo
    The reader of your memo is a Head of Strategic Planning at Lehman College. Invent a name for this fictitious executive. Do not use me/the instructor. Note: A short video in the Presentations folder on analyzing an organization chart may be of interest. Refer to exercise 2 of the MAF1[a] or the textbook for more info on writing to different audiences.
