Find and review a CALIFORNIA based prevention program. There are quite a few
and many are in our own county. The format for the paper is the same as above.
Introduction
• Give an overview of California’s history of substance abuse prevention
(government and non-government based prevention efforts). Transition with a
paragraph explaining what Part II of your paper is about, the name of the program
you review in the paper and why you chose this particular program.
Name and Location of Program
• The name and location of the program. (include the physical address of the
office (IN CALIFORNIA) where the program was used, phone number(s), website
or internet address, contact person’s name, etc.)
Program Elements
• What are the specific elements of the program? What do they do? Are they
educational or environmental (or something else?). What activities do they do? Are
they based in a community or are they larger (such as some of the extremely large
federal prevention efforts). What is their target population? Do they charge anyone
for anything? (literature, meetings, offices, etc.)
Program Funding Sources
• How is the program funded? I.e., how is it paid for? (government funding,
private donations, grants, federal, state or local taxes? Etc
•
History and Duration of Program
• How long has the program been in operation? Give a little history of the
program—how it started, why it was started, who started it, etc.
Functions, Staff, Internship
• How many people are on staff? What are their functions? Do they offer
fieldwork/internship opportunities for students? If not, would they consider doing
that? (you would have to call or email to find this out OR you can read about intern
opportunities, if they offer them, on their website)
