Seminar Leadership Assignment: Each week (with 2 exceptions) we will read and discuss an article in a seminar. All students are expected to have completed the reading and be prepared to discuss it. For each seminar, 2 or 3 students will be designated as “seminar leaders”. On your day to be a “seminar leader” you will lead the class discussion by first presenting a short introduction to the article which incorporates outside research into the topic with which the article engages. You will also come prepared with a series of questions which can form the basis of the class discussion. The group leader is responsible for finding additional sources such as books and articles that relate to the assigned article and presenting information from these sources as part of their presentation. Questions that the group leader might want to ask themselves in preparing to teach the rest of the group include but are not limited to: What background information do I need to introduce in order to help the other students better understand the article? What larger issues does the article engage with? How does it relate to the topics and themes of the course? To Canadian history as a whole? Were there elements of the article that might be difficult for the group to understand? How can I foster greater understanding of these issues? How can I create discussion questions that will foster a useful group discussion? The class following your seminar, you will hand in a written version of your seminar leadership assignment which will include: 1. The information you presented as background, including an annotated bibliography of the sources you used (2-3 pages) 2. A list of the questions you prepared for the class (1 page) 3. Self-evaluation of the seminar (1 page). Including your reflections on how the seminar went and what you learned from the experience of leading a class. The 20% of your grade for this assignment will be based upon a combination of your written assignment and in-class seminar leadership. In-class leadership will be evaluated based on your level of preparedness as well as skills in leading the seminar and engaging the class in the assigned material. I would like to do a questionnaire style that i hand out and base the discussion on the answers. Could you please come up with the introduction and questions, as well as the hand in report and the self evaluation. I am not too sure how many pages to put in so i will just put a couple for each. The project is based on the article….Steven High, “I’ll Wrap the Fucking Canadian Flag Around Me: A Nationalist Response to Plant Shutdowns, 1969-1984”, Journal of the Canadian Historical Association. 2001, Vol. 12, p. 199-225 .
