Sample Solution
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
Overview: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a genetic disorder of the heart muscle in which the heart muscle becomes thickened without an obvious cause. This thickening can lead to problems with how well the heart works, including abnormal heart rhythms and reduced blood flow out of the heart. It affects both men and women of any age and ethnicity, though it’s most commonly diagnosed in adults between 30-50 years old. HCM is usually inherited, but can also occur due to environmental or lifestyle factors such as high cholesterol or smoking.
Diagnosis: Diagnosis of HCM begins with a detailed medical history and physical exam. A doctor may use tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram (ultrasound scan), or MRI to look at the structure and function of the affected areas of the heart. Genetic testing may also be performed if a person has a family history of HCM.
