CASE STUDY Patient Diagnosis

Case studies outline a particular event, incident, or individual. They are used in various fields of study including science, medicine, and business. We have

looked at a few cases from your text book so you have an idea how they are presented. The purpose of the case study is to give you the opportunity to be a

detective and using a few pieces of information, figure outthe infectious disease that is affecting the patient. So in this assignment we are assuming that

you are microbiologist working for Lard Can Medical Center somewhere in the southern United States. You have been getting many new cases lately and it has

been your job to determine the pathogenic organism causing the disease, what disease the patient has, and what is the best treatment given the patient’s

unique symptoms and history. You are asked to present to your colleagues a case that was particularly interesting to you.

What are the important things that you need to figure out about the infectious disease that you have to investigate?

1)What disease does your “patient” have?

2)What is the etiology of the disease?

3)What key information did you use from the case study to determine the disease the patient has?

4)After looking up information about the disease:

a.What are the usual symptoms of the disease?

b.What is the pathogenesis of the disease?

c.How did the patient get the disease?

d.What is the prognosis for the patient?

e.What is the usual treatment of the disease? (Antibiotics and general care of the patient.)
