TASK B. – ESSAY (criteria 2.1 and 3.1)

You must show your understanding of the relevant theories by explaining them in an objective and succinct manner and clearly relate them to MDD. You will need to present an essay that is structured in a way that is generally logical & fluent, using psychological terminology accurately. Your writing should conform to standard conventions and you will be expected to use the Harvard format for the bibliography with some accuracy and you will be expected to keep broadly to the word limits.

TITLE:
Discuss the different psychological approaches to understanding and treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
GUIDANCE:
YOU MUST USE THE CONVENTIONS OF ESSAY WRITING AS FOLLOWS:
A Title
An Introduction to the essay, covering the main topics you will be discussing and any relevant definitions e.g. MDD (major depressive disorder), you can also include something about why the subject is important or interesting, this should be relatively short.
The main body should be clearly divided into a number of topics, each of which should be introduced and follow the order you discussed in your Introduction (remember to back up any statements with evidence including citations). You also need to relate each piece of evidence to the essay title for a higher grade.
You need to demonstrate your understanding of the four psychological perspectives (Behavioural, Psychoanalytic, Cognitive and Humanistic) and the biological perspective and their relation to MDD:
It would be useful to firstly outline how the Medical approach differs in its basic assumptions to the Psychological approaches.
You should also aim to explain the different perspectives in their a) overall approach to understanding people and b) each perspective’s explanation for MDD, and c) how this leads to particular treatments.
Include key theorists e.g. Seligman, Beck, Maslow, Rogers, Freud and how their work can be applied to explaining MDD.
You may give more weight to those approaches that are currently favoured by the National Health Service (NHS).
The conclusion for your essay should summarise the main points from the experiments you have discussed. This is not the place for your personal opinions nor should you include any new information here. The marker should be able to read your Introduction (the topics you are going to be talking about) and your Conclusion (the main points of how you have answered the question set in the essay title) and know what your essay is about!
