Where did hymns originate? How were hymns established in African American culture and specifically into gospel music? We will watch two documentaries and focus on one icon. Most notably the history of gospel music with Charles Albert Tindley We will explore his background (i.e. beginnings, his life, and what he did at the time of his deaths). What was going on in America in his era? What struggles did he and others face? How has it shaped the African American community then and now?
