• Introduction
o This should be at least one page. This should go over the subject of the lab. For example, if you were
doing the Light Lab, you would need to discuss what is light, how does it work, talk about any calculations,
etc. Please be aware, these things can absolutely go into more than one page. Do not limit yourself. You
MUST CITE any information used in APA format. No citations mean a zero for this section.
• Method Review
o You must include a portion for discussing your method.
▪ So you decided to recreate the Chemistry Lab by filling up an enclosure the size of a large storage unit
with gas and then put a hot flame inside to see what happened. Why did you choose something so big?
How did you get those chemicals in there?
▪ You chose to do the Light Lab, and instead of a small lightbox, you found a piece of equipment that
shines so bright you need to wear goggles to even be in the room. What kind of bulb is that? Why did you
pick it? (Note: This portion should not be part of your introduction. This should be an addition to that section.
▪ Are there any dangers to consider? Best to mention them now.
▪ You are free to include any pictures, diagrams, charts, etc. that may help.
• You must have a clear objective statement.
o What is the overall purpose of the lab? For example, in the Chemistry lab, your objective was to perform a
chemical reaction and demonstrate how oxygen is made/not made by using a flame.
• Methods and Materials
o This section should be set up as the ones seen in the lab manual. Go over each section and, to the best
of your abilities, explain each part of the lab in steps for someone else to follow. Be sure to write in a distinct
voice.
▪ “Place the dynamite into the container”(CORRECT)
▪ “The dynamite was placed into the container” (WRONG)
• Conclusion
o What should be the expected results?
o What questions should have been answered?
o Any additional information you think would be important
o Citations Page at the end
You are free to use your imagination when it comes to setting up your experiment. Be creative, remember
you have no restrictions. What should not be imaginary are your sentence structures, vocabulary, writing
style, grammar, and correct citations. You are expected to hand in a college-level paper. Make sure to read
the rubric to get an idea of how you will be graded.
Do not include any additional “header” after the cover page. I do not need to see your name, date, class,
etc. take up 4 lines double spaced so you can start the paper halfway down the page and think you’ve
done a full page of work.
The sections listed above are required. At the end of your Lab, I should find every section clearly labeled
and having answered and/or explained anything required. Use the lab manual you have now for guidance
on how to format your paper and experiment.
