Students are required to produce a digital final project for this course in which they
do two things:
(a) explore an area of child development in more detail than is possible in this course and
(b) create an attractive digital final product (such as a website, a video of a public service
announcement, a music video, a skit, or?) that serves to benefit the community in some way.
Digital videos must be no longer than 5 minutes in duration. Be creative!
Some examples of relevant topics include the following (note that selected topics may be different
than those listed here but must discuss an aspect of typical development relevant to children
between the ages of 2 and 16 years):
- (a) Examine the long-term consequences of concussions in child athletes and (b) produce a
video-recorded public service announcement to share with parents and coaches explaining
the dangers and how to help ameliorate them. - (a) Design a program to improve children’s literacy in poor neighborhoods and (b) create a
website that advertises and explains that program. - (a) Identify ways to reduce bullying in childhood and (a) develop an online game that provides
children with resources for coping with bullies (b).
Students must submit an annotated bibliography along with their final project that references at
least four peer-reviewed journal articles that were used to develop the final product (note:
dissertations are not peer-reviewed journal articles!).
The annotated bibliography must:
(a) describe each reference including its main claims and findings (approximately one
paragraph each) and
(b) indicate how the reference was used to design and support the claims made in the final
project.
