Church History

Drawing upon chapters 29-33 in Readings in World Christian History, you are to develop an essay on asceticism that tells us what it was about, what its various practices entailed, who was engaged in it, and what its spiritual value was (or was intended to be). Your essay needs to have a thesis statement, needs to support the thesis with material from several primary authors, and needs to draw a conclusion. Essay# 2: three pages Describe the central theological issue or issues that were at stake in the Arian-Nicene controversy in the fourth century. Don't just tell the story of the controversy. What was at stake theologically? In writing this essay, you should pay attention to both the primary readings in Readings in World Christian History, as well as the material from the main textbook, History of the World Christian Movement. You are free to go beyond these texts in looking for resources. Just be sure to footnote your sources properly if you do. As part of your conclusion to this essay, you must include a statement as to what, if anything, you see at stake for the Christian movement today.   Essay number 3: three pages Who was Constantine, and why is he important to the history of Christianity? Discuss both some positive and some negative outcomes of the effect of his reign. What meaning, insight, or lesson do you see in the events of his life for the church today? In writing this essay, you should pay attention to both the primary readings in Readings in World Christian History, as well as the material from the main textbook, History of the World Christian Movement. You are free to go beyond these texts in looking for resources. Once again, just be sure to footnote your sources properly if you do.
