CIVIL ENGINEERING Construction

1- Ground water control methods:From the analysis of site and soil investigation reports, it was observed that ground consists of water below at the depth of 7m. The ground condition is not suitable for the well point system. At any cost, water has to be dewatered at the construction site and there is not restriction on amount to be spent to implement the required dewatering method but must be an effective method to dewater which can substantially increase the rate of water extraction in cohesive soils, such as clay.According to the ground conditions, student should recommend any TWO temporary dewatering methods to lower the ground water table which are best suitable to given situations of the construction site.

2-Output of the construction plant team:It is required to excavate 10,000m3 of soil and the material is ‘SANDY CLAY’.Find out bulking factor and bucket fill factor that should be applied.(Table 5.3 Bulk density and Bulking factors – Dene, R. W 1996, Earthworks, Pg:105) (Table 5.4 - typical bucket fill factors Dene, R. W 1996, Earthworks, Pg:105) Available construction plant for this project is:

a) 360° excavator with a bucket of heaped capacity 0.XX m3 & typical cycle time is half a minute.

b) Trucks with XX m3 capacity which require 2 minutes to position itself under the 360° excavator (positioning time).

Lorry work cycle is:

According to the data and site circumstances student should:
i. Calculate the output of the 360°excavator per week, assuming a normal working week of 40 hours which includes down time of 10 minutes in every hour. (15 marks)
ii. Determine the ‘Plant Team’ and ‘Number of Weeks’ required for the removal of 10000m3 of soil.
